Top-Ranked Firebirds Get 3rd Straight AAA Triumph

The pride of the Lower Bucks league and current No. 1 in the Breakaway! AAA Top 10, Holy Ghost Prep, was able to score three unanswered goals en route to a methodical, if not stylish, 3-1 victory Monday over St Joseph's Prep at the Skatium. Seventh-ranked St Joes was able to keep the game scoreless against the Firebirds in the first period, despite being outshot 10-3. 'Ghost forwards junior Brendan Bradley and senior Tommy Seravalli created several chances, but their efforts were matched by Prep's standout goalie, junior Paul Sjostrom.
Shortly after an unsuccessful power play early in period two, SJ Prep sophomore Pat Swanick picked up a loose puck in front of 'Ghost goalie Vince Stalletti and found the back of the net. The Prep's lead did not last too long, as Seravalli picked up a rebound in the high slot off a Dave Bowman point shot about three minutes later. Seravalli made no mistake with plenty of net to shoot at, and beat Sjostrom to give his team some momentum.
Early in the third, Ghost assumed command. Seravalli found senior defenseman Paul Burns at the point. Burns let a slap shot fly that was deflected by Bradley to put their team up 2-1. After trading blows for the remainder of the period, Bradley was able to put the game away with five seconds left when he scored an empty-net goal. Holy Ghost will face Roman Catholic on Thursday at the Flyers Skatezone Northeast. St Joe's will battle Father Judge on Friday, also at the Flyers Skatezone Northeast, in a game that could mean a great deal in the AAA rankings.
