With old man winter settling, Parkland stormed back from its December hiatus, turning up the heat jets and scalding Southern Lehigh and Northampton in a couple of message-sending victories. Standing at 10-0 in league games, and 7-0 in all important divisional play, the Trojans enter the back side of the season led by a trio of high scoring offensive weapons: senior Assistant Captain Jeremy Campano, last year’s point leader, junior Daniel Plinke, and first year varsity player, sizzling sophomore Dan Barnaby, all with 28 points.
In the ongoing struggle between Parkland and Northampton for league dominance, this year’s one-game edition was a classic with the Red and Gray prevailing 5-2. Called for fifteen penalties to Northampton’s six, Parkland spent most of the night skating shorthanded, successfully killing off six, five-on-threes. Bolstered by a determined defense, junior Tim Hilty stopped 29 shots by the Konkrete Kids, and amazingly, did not yield one short-handed goal. On the other end of the ice, senior Austin Mishko was brilliant in net, tuning back 34 Trojans offerings and stopping the high-flying Barnaby and Plinke on several breakaways.
In their other game, the Frozen Trojans handed winless Southern Lehigh a 12-1 drubbing. Parkland, who normally will not run up the score on opponents once the game is in hand, let loose a torrent of pent-up energy on the hapless Spartans. Led by four players with four points each, and a couple of others with three, the Parkland offense was in full gear for the first two periods before calling off the dogs. Hilty and freshman JV call-up Robbie Stock, sitting in for an ailing Jordan Potosky, combined to limit the Spartans to a single tally, scored by defensive standout, sophomore Brad Zamojski.
In one of many cross-division contests throughout the league, Southern Lehigh, with no seniors on the roster, retired their “winless” moniker with a 5-4, exciting televised win over a tenacious Phillipsburg. Led by high scoring junior, Brady O’Donnell with a hat trick, the young Spartans held off a late charge by the Stateliners’ high scoring junior, Patrick Dolan, with two goals at the end of the third period. The real stars of the game, however, were the two goalies. In net for Southern Lehigh, freshman Luke Frawley worked 32 saves from the relentless Jersey-siders, while senior Joe Jermain pushed back 24 times for Phillipsburg.
In another down-to-the wire TV game, Northampton held off Quakertown 5-4 in a fast paced collision between last year's division champions. Junior Nate Salukis netted three for the Kids, as senior Zach Gower scored one and assisted on two others for the Panthers.
Quakertown bounded back with an important division win over Easton 7-4. League leading scorer Gower had a hat trick and play maker in this one, aided by JV call-up, freshman Alex Dyer with two goals and a play maker, and senior Jake Ferrara with yet another play maker. For the Red Rovers, sophomore Kyle Wambold netted two, senior Greg Doll had a goal and three assists, and senior net minder Gary Strausser made 31 tough saves.
Emmaus (7-3, 2nd Place) defeated Freedom (5-2, 3rd) in a crucial game for one of the playoff spots in the Pure Division. Junior Ian Kerr had a hat trick for the Green Hornets, and senior Kurtis Shollenberger had both Patriot goals. Freedom next faced bitter cross-town rival Liberty, tuning back the Hurricanes 5-1. Junior Sean Driscoll led the Pats with three lamp lighters, as junior Nick Martone lit the red light for the Canes.
In the Non-Pure Division, Whitehall (9-1-1, 1st Place) is fighting it out with Northampton (7-1, 2nd) for the top seed. The Zephyrs won two important division games, beating Nazareth by 7-3 and Central/Bethlehem Catholic by 6-2. Against Nazareth, Whitehall junior Mike Bush scored a hat trick and an assist. Senior Levi Weiand had two for the Blue Eagles. In the Central/Becca game, the Zephyr's senior Jake Charles earned his own hat trick patch, while the two Catholic schools got goals from senior Kevin McDermott and junior Mark Renaldo. Freshman Charlie Varga made 39 saves against the Zephs’ high octane offence.
Pleasant Valley/Palisades (7-2, 3rd), also in the hunt for one of the coveted playoff spots, won two of their own in Non-Pure Division play, first beating Philipsburg 9-3, and then handling Nazareth 6-2. In the first game, the twelve goals were tallied by eleven different players, as the opposing goaltenders battled through an offensive onslaught. Senior William Schailey made 23 saves for the Bears, and Jermain, in another strong performance in a losing effort, turned away 30. Sophomores Richard Bardell and David Deiegel had two goals and an assist each for the northern Bears in the win over Naz, as senior Kevin Truskowski and sophomore Dylan Sager scored the Blue Eagles' goals.
Sophomore Ryan McMahon scored a hat trick in leading Liberty to the win. Renaldo and senior Kerry Queen scored for the Catholic schools.
