La Salle sophomore center Drew Smolcynski tallied a goal and three assists and senior goalie Garrett Nesbitt stopped all the shots he faced in the final two periods to pace their team to 6-2 victory over Archbishop Ryan on Monday, January 11 at the Flyers Skatezone Northeast.
The Ryan Raiders (2-5-0 in PCL Red play) got on the board early in the game when Joe Camerlengo fed Brandon Paluba for a goal on a slap shot from the point. The Explorers (6-1-2) fought back and tied the game a few minutes later on a rebound goal by freshman Ron Greco that was set up by Smolcynski and fellow sophomore Nick Popoff. Late in the first period Ryan regained the lead when John Connolly carried the puck into the zone, skated around the net and found Camerlengo open in front for goal on a wrist shot. Not to be outdone, La Salle scored seconds later when Smolcynski connected with Popoff in front for a tying goal off a one-timer.
Play was back and forth throughout the second period. Midway through the stanza, Raiders goalie Taylor Fazen stopped Popoff on a breakaway giving his squad some momentum. Ryan looked to gain the lead when Jayson Marbach was stopped on a breakaway. Connolly put home the rebound, only to have his attempt at breaking the tie disallowed due to the net coming off its moorings. The period stayed tied 2-2 with Lasalle having a small edge in shots.
La Salle's depth decided the game in the third, as they were able to break play open against the undermanned Raiders. Freshman Drew Grajewski picked up a loose puck behind the net and beat Fazen with a wrap-around shot. After that the Explorers took control. Popoff tallied his second goal of the game when Smolcynski won a faceoff in Ryan's zone and fed the puck in front for a one-timer that found the back of the net. Smolcynski gave his team even more breathing room when he picked up a loose puck on a broken clearing attempt by Ryan. He scored a one-handed goal from a slap shot in the slot. Freshman Nick Master added an insurance marker late in the third on a pretty deke in front to give La Salle its 6-2 final edge.
The Explorers will battle Father Judge next in early February at Hatfield in a rematch of an early season tie between the two squads. Ryan will square off against Judge first, this Friday at the Flyers Skatezone Northeast.
